Subak is a community organization that specifically regulates the irrigation system of paddy fields used in suitable planting padidi Bali, Indonesia. This subak usually has a temple called Pura Uluncarik, or Pura Bedugul, specially built by landowners and farmers dedicated to the goddess of prosperity and fertility of the goddess Sri. This irrigation system is governed by a traditional leader who is also a farmer in Bali.

The green revolution has caused a change in this irrigation system, with new rice varieties and new methods, farmers have to grow rice as often as possible, ignoring the needs of other farmers. This is very different from the Subak system, where the needs of all farmers take precedence. The new method of the green revolution results in abundant outcomes initially, but is then followed by constraints such as water shortages, pests and pollution caused by pesticides both in soil and in water. Finally it was found that traditional irrigation systems were very effective in tackling these constraints.

Subak has been studied by Clifford Geertz, while J. Stephen Lansing has drawn public attention to the importance of traditional irrigation systems. He studied temples in Bali, especially those destined for agriculture, which is usually forgotten by foreigners. In 1987 Lansing worked with Balinese farmers to develop a computer model of the Subak irrigation system. By that he proves the effectiveness of Subak as well as the importance of this system.

In 2012 this UNESCO, recognizes Subak (Bali Cultur Landscape), as a World Heritage Site, at the first trial taking place in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Join Downhill cycling tour with Bali Eco Cycling in Ubud !!!

Cycle Downhill and see the 'real Bali'

Escape the hustle and join us to discover the magic of rural Bali on our famous full day Bali Eco Educational Cycling Tour, suitable for all ages.
“This is not just the best tour in Bali, it’s the best tour we’ve ever been on. The guides were friendly, fun and informative, the scenery fantastic, we learnt so much about the Balinese culture and lunch was something special. Highly recommend this tour for all visitors to Bali”…..Tim and Karen Phillips, Ontario, Canada.
The original and authentic eco/educational cycling tour, (many try to copy us, claim to be us and use our text) this tour was designed to take the visitor to Bali away from the tourist areas and show them the Bali they want to see – ‘the real Bali’ and to learn about the Balinese culture in the process and that’s what we have been doing for the past nine years. This tour is now promoted in every guide book on Bali/Indonesia (the Lonely Planet Guide Books on Bali, Indonesia and Best of Bali, The Rough Guide Book to Bali, The Natural Guide to Bali and numerous French, German and Dutch guide books) has been consistently voted the best tour in Bali and a must for every visitor.
For guests who are confident on bicycles and want more of an adventure, we offer two alternatives: the full day East Bali Adventure program and the half day Ubud Eco Cycling & massage (available for sunrise cycling, morning/after breakfast, and afternoon/after lunch). As the terrain is more challenging, for this tour we only accept bookings for guests aged 13 to 55. Inquire about joining this program via email at baliecocycling@gmail.com or check out our booking calendar by following the links below to see what tours are already running.
Our daily Bali Eco Cycling program is very popular with families, we have even hosted four generations of one family on this tour. Your safety is our priority, with Australian-standard safety equipment for baby seats.

After being picked up at your hotel we drive in an air conditioned car to Penelokan (Kintamani) where we breakfast overlooking the active volcano, Mt. Batur and its crater lake, enjoying the most stunning views in Bali.
A short drive after breakfast and we’re off on our mountain bikes through the heartland of Bali, travelling downhill on non tourist, secret back roads and minor village roads (with little traffic), experiencing typical Balinese daily life and enjoying the beautiful Balinese countryside to Ubud. We ride through lush forested areas, plantations full of Balinese staples and cash crops (cloves, coffee, cocoa, vanilla, tapioca, taro, local vegetables and exotic tropical fruits), through timeless small villages and lush rice paddy panoramas. And throngs of adorable Balinese children will be there calling out ‘hellos’ and wanting ‘high fives’ on the way down. If we chance upon a ceremony (and we often do) you will be invited to witness the events and our guides will offer explanations.
We show you a Bali other visitors never see and our experienced guides explain this amazing culture and the relationship the Balinese have with their beautiful island.
We have numerous stops on the way, including a visit to a Balinese home/compound, (where you get to see first hand how the Balinese live outside the tourist areas), a Balinese plantation (where you learn of the medicinal and culturally important uses of local plants, the process of making coffee and see many of the spices you have used in cooking and tropical fruits growing in their natural environment. We also get to sample many exotic tropical fruits, local herbal teas and coffees, including Coffee Luwak, the unusually produced and most expensive coffee in the world). We also stop off at a village temple, an enormous Banyan tree and stunning rice paddy panoramas. We go for a short walk in the rice paddies to see villagers planting and harvesting rice (you can join in) and see traditional craftsmen at work en route.

For athletic guests who want a cycling workout, we offer an optional 6 to 8km extra flat and uphill riding towards the end of the tour.
Lunch, served in our restaurant, set in the serene surrounds of rice paddies, is a delectable Balinese feast, including the smoked duck/chicken the guide books rave about (Many guests describe our lunch as the best meal they have had in Bali). We also cater for vegetarians and can accommodate children with special meals.
A Balinese family concern with Western family ties, we are the only company that can proudly offer western standards of safety, hygiene and sanitation. And those standards are the norm. Our groups are kept at a size of 8 or 10 (unless requests for a larger group) and we have a senior leading guide and a secondary guide at the rear of the group (unlike other tours). Our car also follows us down the mountain in case anyone is not feeling well.
After lunch you have an optional visit to the Ubud Monkey Forest and temple complex.
We are rather flexible with our tour and if you want less information and more riding we can accommodate you as well.
This tour is a full day tour (though, we can cater for time requirements) and we like to describe it as not just an adventure, but a cultural, ecological, learning and culinary experience! We promise you won’t be disappointed!

Tour Includes:
Pick up and return to your hotel by A/C car.
